First Weeks After Surgery

First 2-6 weeks post-surgery. You need something that's soft, front-opening, and has no underwire pressing against tender tissue. Look for recovery bras and front-closure soft cups - the priority is comfort and protection while you heal, not fit or form. Many surgeons recommend these before your fitting appointment.

Compression Support

Lymphedema management, post-surgical swelling, or medical recommendation Compression bras are a clinical garment designed to reduce swelling and support lymphatic drainage. They're usually worn for a specific medical reason on the advice of your surgeon or physiotherapist.

Daily Wear

When you're healed and ready for everyday comfort. Once your surgeon has cleared you for a standard bra, you have the full collection to choose from. Wire-free styles offer the most flexibility and comfort. Soft-cup moulded bras give a smooth silhouette under fitted clothing. Padded styles add shape and coverage.

Active Wear

Exercise, sport, or a brief dip in the water. Pocketed sports bras and active wear styles hold your breast form securely during activity. If you swim, look specifically for pocketed mastectomy swimwear. The breast form stays in place in water and the bra itself is designed for extended chlorine exposure.

Front Closure

Limited mobility or shoulder reach. Front-closure bras are one of the most practical purchases many women make in the months after surgery. If raising your arms or reaching behind your back is uncomfortable, which is completely normal, a front-closure style makes dressing independently possible from day one.

Underwire & Structured Styles

Fully healed, seeking a more structured silhouette. Underwire mastectomy bras provide lift and a more defined shape under fitted clothing. They're not recommended until your surgeon confirms your healing is complete. A proper fitting by a specialist will ensure the wire doesn't press on lymph nodes or scar tissue.

What kind of bra should I wear immediately after mastectomy surgery?

In the first 2–6 weeks after surgery, your surgeon will typically recommend a soft, front-closure bra without underwire. The priority at this stage is protection and comfort while your tissue heals - not fit or form. Look for bras with front fastenings, no bones or underwire, and soft, flat seams.

Many women find a slightly larger size comfortable in the early weeks as

Does my provincial health plan cover mastectomy bras?

Coverage varies by province. In Ontario, the ADP (Assistive Devices
Program) provides funding toward breast prostheses and may cover bras in
certain categories. Quebec's RAMQ and Nova Scotia's MSI offer similar programs. Most provincial plans require a physician's prescription and a fitting by a certified specialist - which Naturally You's Amoena Certified Mastectomy
Fitters are qualified to provide.

What is the difference between mastectomy bras and regular bras?

A mastectomy bra has one or two built-in breast form pockets - fabric pouches sewn into the cup that hold a breast prosthesis securely in place throughout the day. They're designed so the prosthesis doesn't shift, show, or need repositioning.

The construction is also different: mastectomy bras typically have wider side panels, a more supportive underbust band, and no wires that could press against lymph nodes or surgical sites.

Standard bras don't have these pockets and aren't designed to accommodate the weight and position of a breast form.

Do these bras work with prostheses and breast forms?

Yes. Amoena's styles are great with or without prostheses or breast forms. They include built-in pockets to securely hold whatever form you need.

Do I need a wire-free bra after mastectomy?

For most women, wire-free mastectomy bras are recommended for at least the first 6–12 months after surgery, and many women prefer them long-term.

The concern with underwire is that it can press on lymph nodes, scar tissue, or
areas where lymph drainage has been disrupted, which can cause discomfort or, in some cases, contribute to lymphedema.

Once your surgeon has cleared you, some women do return to lightly-wired styles - but only after a fitting to ensure the wire placement is correct for their post-surgical anatomy. Our certified fitters can advise you on this specifically.

Can I wear a mastectomy bra if I had a bilateral (double) mastectomy?

Yes - we carry a full range of Amoena bras designed for bilateral mastectomy, with two pockets to hold two breast forms simultaneously, or to accommodate asymmetric forms.

Bilateral mastectomy does present some additional fitting considerations - including form weight balance and side-panel support - which is why a fitting is particularly valuable. How do I choose the right size?

Start with your pre-surgery size if it feels right, then consult our fit guide for post-mastectomy sizing tips. If you’re unsure, contact our fit team with your measurements and we’ll recommend the best styles.
