Naturally You Boutique Expert Wig Fitting

Wig fitting: why it matters and what to expect

Choosing a wig online without guidance - scrolling through styles, reading descriptions, hoping something works - is how most Canadian retailers expect you to do it. We do it differently.

Our fitting specialists have years of experience helping women find wigs that work for their face shape, their lifestyle, their colour, and their comfort. A wig fitting appointment with Naturally You is private, unhurried, and completely without pressure. You can come into our Barrie boutique to try styles in person - or we can do a full virtual fitting consultation by video, anywhere in Canada. You'll leave with a clear recommendation, not a list of options you have to sort through on your own.

You don't need to have made any decision before you book. Many of our customers book a consultation simply to ask questions, get a feel for the options, and understand what to expect. We're here for that too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do wigs look natural after chemotherapy?

Modern wigs - especially those using lace front and monofilament cap construction - can look remarkably natural. The lace front creates a hairline that's invisible from normal conversational distance.

Monofilament caps allow individual hairs to be styled in any direction, making the scalp appear to show through just as it would with natural hair. Jon Renau's SmartLace collection is specifically designed with this level of realism in mind.

That said, fit, style choice, and colour matching all matter significantly. A professional wig fitting - which Naturally You offers virtually and in-person - makes a substantial difference in how natural your wig looks, because a well-fitted wig that suits your face shape and colouring will always look more natural than the right wig worn incorrectly, or the wrong wig chosen without guidance.

What is the difference between synthetic and human hair wigs?

Synthetic wigs are pre-styled and return to their original shape after washing - no heat styling required, easier care, and generally lower price point.

High-quality synthetic fibres like Jon Renau's Extralife technology are remarkably natural-looking and hold up well through regular wear.

Human hair wigs offer the most natural texture and movement, and can be heat-styled and treated much like your own hair. They require more maintenance, are typically priced higher, and may be the better choice for long-term wear or for women who want to maintain their usual styling routine.

Our fitters can help you decide which option suits your lifestyle, budget, and timeline.

Is a wig covered by provincial health insurance in Canada?

Coverage for wigs varies by province and by the reason for hair loss. Some provincial health programs and extended health insurance plans include coverage for wigs related to medical hair loss (including chemotherapy) - often listed as "cranial prostheses" rather than "wigs." A physician's or oncologist's letter confirming medical necessity is typically required to initiate a claim.

We recommend contacting your provincial health program and your extended benefits provider before purchasing, and asking specifically about "cranial prosthesis" coverage.

Our team can help you understand what documentation may support your claim.

When should I get a wig - before or after I start losing my hair?

Most wig specialists, including our fitters, recommend choosing and ordering your wig before hair loss begins - ideally within the first few weeks of your treatment plan.

There are two practical reasons: first, while you still have your hair, you can more easily match your natural colour and use your own hairline as a reference for style selection. Second, some wig orders (particularly custom or human hair styles) have lead times. Emotionally, having your wig ready before you need it can feel like one less thing to manage during an already intense time.

That said, there is no wrong time to start - if you've already experienced hair loss, our fitters work with that too, and many women find they're more comfortable with the process once they're already through the initial experience.

What is a lace front wig, and is it the right choice for me?

A lace front wig has a strip of sheer, skin-toned mesh along the hairline, into which individual hairs are hand-knotted. This creates the appearance of a natural hairline - the hair appears to grow from the scalp rather than starting at a visible edge. Lace front wigs are the most popular choice for women who wear their hair away from their face, have visible hairlines (for example, with their hair pulled up or back), or want the highest level of naturalness. They do require a slightly more careful application process and the lace edge should be kept protected.

Jon Renau's SmartLace collection uses lace front construction across most of its styles. If you're unsure whether a lace front is right for you, our fitting specialists can show you the difference.

How does a wig fitting at Naturally You work?

Our wig fitting consultations are private, relaxed, and available virtually or in person at our boutique in Barrie, Ontario.

Here's what to expect: your fitter will ask you a few questions about your lifestyle, your styling preferences, your colour, and any scalp sensitivities. They'll then walk you through the Jon Renau styles we carry - explaining the difference in cap constructions, showing you how each one sits, and narrowing down to the styles most likely to work for you.

Virtual fittings are done by video and work remarkably well - our fitters are experienced at reading face shape and recommending styles by video call.

There's no obligation to purchase at or after your fitting. Many women book a consultation first, take some time, and then come back to order when they're ready. To book, visit our Book a Wig Fitting page
